My son did The Hive’s Summer Skate Camp last year and absolutely lived for it. He came home every day stoked, sweaty, and talking nonstop about tricks he landed, friends he made, and what he was going to try next. His skating progressed fast, but more importantly, he felt like he belonged. The shop treated him like one of their own crew, not “just a kid at camp.” He even made it into the photo on this page, which he now reminds us of constantly.
Growing up, skateboarding was counter-culture for my generation. New people? Kids? Anyone who might “get in the way”? Hard no. Inclusivity was not the vibe. Charlie, the shop owner and New London native, comes from that era like me—but he’s evolved with the sport in the best possible way. He’s kept the soul of skateboarding while building a genuinely welcoming, supportive, and rad program for the next generation of groms.
The coaching is legit, the atmosphere is positive without being corny, and the kids are encouraged to push themselves while still having fun. Since camp ended, my son spent the winter grinding flatground and watching Mike Vallely videos… and now he’s convinced he can skate and fight better than me. (Unclear which confidence boost worries me more.)
If you want your kid to improve their skating, make real friends, and feel like part of something authentic, The Hive Summer Camp is it. Core roots, modern mindset, and a whole lot of stoke.
